Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
This work of pardoning every offense of every man, and that continually, seemed so difficult, even to the disciples themselves, that they saw, without an extraordinary degree of faith, they should never be able to keep this command.
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
In order to keep the disciples humble in the performance of such miraculous works
not that the disciples had any such servants under them, though the words are directed to them, for they had left all, and followed Christ
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
servants girded them up about their loins, that they might be fit for service
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
It is never supposed that the master waits on the servant
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
we ought to make the end of one service the beginning of another.
when we have been working for God, still we must be waiting on God, waiting on him continually.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
even the apostles themselves, who did so much more for Christ than others, must not think that they had thereby made him their debtor.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
This is expected from servants, and Christ might require it from us, but he does not insist upon it. He was among his disciples as one that served
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,路 17:1-10;John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,路 17:10。
though they are not those unprofitable servants that bury their talents, and shall be cast into utter darkness, yet as to Christ, and any advantage that can accrue to him by their services, they are unprofitable
Nor is this the sense, that they are unprofitable to men; for they may be, and are very useful and serviceable to men, and to the saints; but that they are so to God
God is happy without us, but we are undone without him.
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
can give nothing to him but what is his own, and his due
a man so employed ought to be thankful to God, that has bestowed ministerial gifts upon him
but he is not to expect thanks from God
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
This text has often been produced to prove that no man can live without committing sin against God. But let it be observed, the text says unprofitable servants, not sinful servants.
your obedience and services, however excellent in themselves, and profitable to you, have added nothing, and can add nothing, to the absolute excellencies and glories of your God.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Though we should do all things that are commanded us, and alas! in many things we come short of this
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
since when he has done the most and best, he has done but what he should, and what he was obliged to, and in that is greatly deficient
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
he may indeed be commended for it, but not thanked
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Let us be in care to finish our work, and to do that well, and then the reward will come in due time.
We expect God's favour, not because we have by our services made him a debtor to us, but because he has by his promises made himself a debtor to his own honour
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G888。
useless, good for nothing
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G888。
by an hyperbole of pious modesty in Luke 17:10
because, although he has done all, yet he has done nothing except what he ought to have done
