Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Here is the parable of the good householder, which is intended to rivet all the rest.
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G1122。
in the Bible, a man learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings, an interpreter, teacher
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G3617、G2344、G3820。
master of a house, householder
storehouse, repository, magazine
which seems to allude to such articles of food as are fit for use only after having been kept some time (others consider clothing, jewels, etc., as referred to
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
fruits of last year's growth and this year's gathering, abundance and variety, for the entertainment of his friends
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,太 13:51-52;John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,太 13:51。
we have reason to believe they said true, because, when they did not understand, they asked for an explication
This answer, which was truly and faithfully made
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Christ is ready to encourage willing learners in his school, though they are but weak; and to say, Well done, well said.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,太 13:51-52;Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,太 13:51。
It is the will of Christ, that all those who read and hear the word should understand it; for otherwise how should they get good by it?
Divine truths must not be lightly passed over.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Those who are to instruct others, have need to be well instructed themselves.
laying up is in order to laying out, for the benefit of others.
Many are full, but they have no vent (Job xxxii. 19); have a talent, but they bury it
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
A good pastor will not, like a miser, keep these things to himself to please his fancy; nor, like a merchant, traffic with them, to enrich himself; but, like a bountiful father or householder, distribute them with a liberal through judicious hand, for the comfort and support of the whole heavenly family.
He who preaches the same sermon to every congregation, gives the fullest proof that, however well he may speak, he is not a scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
with truths new and old, out of the Old Testament and out of the new
Old experiences, and new observations, all have their use; and we must not content ourselves with old discoveries, but must be adding new. Live and learn.
In bringing forth, things new and old do best together; old truths, but new methods and expressions, especially new affections.
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
not the new Gospel and the old law, for the law is not old, nor the Gospel new; the Gospel is much older than the law
nor things out of the Old and New Testament, for the New Testament was not yet in being; though it is right, and is the business of Gospel preachers, to bring forth such truths and doctrines, as are contained in both
rather truths that are old in themselves, but newly discovered to them, may be intended, and every new acquisition of knowledge and experience, added to the former stock and fund
the phrase seems to denote the plenty and variety of Gospel provisions
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
things new and old - a Jewish phrase for great plenty
Some have thought that old and new things here, which imply the produce of the past and the produce of the present year, may also refer to the old and new covenants
No man can properly understand the Old Testament but through the medium of the New, nor can the New be so forcibly or successfully applied to the conscience of a sinner as through the medium of the Old.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
They were now learning that they might teach, and the teachers among the Jews were the scribes.
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
not legal ones, Scribes in the law of Moses
but evangelical Scribes are here meant, see Matthew 23:34
of which indeed Christ is properly the householder and master, but Gospel ministers are deputies and stewards under him
by "his treasure" is meant, either Christ, who is the great treasury and storehouse of grace and truth
or the word of God, the Scriptures of truth
or the treasure of the Gospel, which is put into their earthen vessels
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
Every scribe - Minister of Christ
out of his treasury - his granary or store-house
The sacred writings should be his treasure, and he should properly understand them.
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G1122。
universally, a religious teacher
many interpret made a disciple unto the kingdom of heaven (which is personified)
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G3100。
to make a disciple; to teach, instruct: τινα, Matthew 28:19
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G1544、G2344。
to bring out of, to draw or bring forth: τί ἐκ τοῦ θησαυροῦ, Matthew 12:35; Matthew 13:52
metaphorically, of the soul, as the repository of thoughts, feelings, purposes, etc.: (Matthew 12:35a G L T Tr WH, 35b)
