"Faith is written not only in books but in lives: bearing witness to grace in suffering, and living out "there is no fear in love" in faithfulness unto death."

"Daniel Nelson (1853–1926) was born to a poor Norwegian family and, during his years at sea, twice visited China before emigrating to farm in Iowa. With no mission society behind him, he sold his farm and arrived in Shanghai with his family in 1890; after the Boxer Rebellion (1900) the Nelsons settled in Xinyang, southern Henan, where they spent 25 years planting churches and opening schools and hospitals. In February 1926, as missionaries gathered in Xinyang behind closed doors for protection from marauding troops, Nelson preached his final sermon before being struck in the head by a bullet; he died 40 days later."

"I, too, with my two children, moved back into the abandoned home — now so empty and desolate. But let no lament take away the gratitude for ten years of happy marriage, for fellowship in the work of the mission, in faith, in love and in harmony. It was a great gift from God, and I have kept her memory as a precious jewel."

"Erik Folke (1862–1939) was a Swedish missionary who went out to China on his own in 1887 and became the pioneer of Swedish missions there. The mission he started, soon renamed the Swedish Mission in China, worked in Shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan in close association with the China Inland Mission. He translated the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi into Swedish and wrote Tänkare i det gamla Kina (Thinkers of Ancient China, 1922); in Chinese he wrote a history of the Old Testament and translated Luther's On the Freedom of a Christian and the Augsburg Confession."

"Argument may leave an opponent speechless, often humiliate him, and sometimes provoke him, but it can never persuade him. When Jesus Christ sent His disciples forth, He told them, 'Go and teach all nations.' He did not say, 'Go and debate with all nations.'"

"After Pastor Ren wrote his autobiography in classical Chinese, Herbert Hudson Taylor undertook the laborious task of translating it into English as material for rewriting. The manuscript was saved when a fire destroyed the mission premises at Hangzhou, and preserved again when, in March 1927, he had to evacuate Zhenjiang at the consul's orders and lost nearly everything else. When Marshall Broomhall revised and condensed it for publication in 1930, he wrote in the foreword that the heavier share of the joint task had fallen to Herbert Taylor, and that without his painstaking labours the book would probably never have seen an English version."
