"Caleb Cook Baldwin (1820–1911) was one of the first American Board missionaries to Fuzhou. He sailed for China with his wife Harriet in 1847 and reached Fuzhou in the spring of 1848, and the couple labored there together for forty-seven years (1848–1895). They learned the local language, founded and superintended schools in city and village, and traveled by boat and sedan chair to preach; with Robert S. Maclay he compiled the Alphabetic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Foochow Dialect (1870), he wrote A Manual of the Foochow Dialect (1871), and with his wife he translated much of the Bible into the Fuzhou dialect."

"Dyer Ball (1796–1866), a medical missionary of the American Board, reached Singapore in 1838 and, after moving on to Macao and Hong Kong, settled in Canton. He ran a boys' school, published Chinese books, tracts and a popular almanac, and toured widely with his medicines and tracts, evangelism always his first concern. With his health impaired in his last years, he still spent most of his time distributing tracts from his street chapel in Canton, where he died in 1866."

"Henry Blodget (1825–1903), a missionary of the American Board, came to China in 1854 and moved from Tianjin to Beijing in 1863. In the mid-1860s he joined W. A. P. Martin, John Shaw Burdon, Joseph Edkins and S. I. J. Schereschewsky on the Peking translation committee, rendering the New Testament into Beijing Mandarin; issued in parts over several years, the revised complete New Testament appeared in 1872, the first Bible translation in the spoken vernacular of Beijing. After forty years in China he retired to America in 1894."

"The Italian Franciscan Gabriele Allegra (1907–1976) came to China in 1931, resolved to translate the whole Bible into Chinese. In 1945 he founded the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Beijing, which moved to Hong Kong in 1948; at the end of 1968 the first one-volume Chinese Catholic Bible was printed. In his last years he suffered severely from heart trouble and high blood pressure; though rest in Italy was recommended, he chose to return to the Studium in Hong Kong and work to the end. He died in Hong Kong on 26 January 1976 and was beatified in 2012."

"The Italian Jesuit Lodovico Buglio (1606-1682) was the first Catholic missionary to reach Sichuan. After Zhang Xianzhong conquered Sichuan in 1644, Buglio and Gabriel de Magalhães were pressed into his service; after Zhang's death Buglio was taken to Beijing in 1648, where after a short captivity he was left free to exercise his ministry, and he later suffered in the persecution under the Kangxi Emperor. He wrote and translated more than eighty works in Chinese, including Parts I and III of Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica, the Roman Missal, the Breviary and the Ritual. He died in Beijing in 1682, was given a state funeral, and was buried in the Zhalan Cemetery."
