"Surely if anything is to be learned from the teachings of history, if the saying of Tertullian that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church is a law of unwasting and perennial energy, and if the promises of God are still secure, a religion which has done so much for China, and the heralds of which have suffered so much from the Chinese, has a great work yet to do in the regeneration of that Empire."

"In his last years Francis Huberty James taught at the Imperial University in Peking; on 14 December 1898 he read a paper on Chinese Literature before the Royal Asiatic Society, arguing that it was "deserving of study" and that "when it is better known it will be more highly esteemed." On the afternoon of 20 June 1900, as the Boxers besieged the legations, he was shot dead crossing the bridge on his way back from the palace of a Mongol prince across the canal. W. A. P. Martin recorded that he and Dr. Morrison of the Times had there made arrangements for the shelter of native Christians: "He, too, sacrificed his life in a noble cause.""

"Nor need our claim in the presence of God be any less simple. When we once have the deep, calm assurance of His will in the matter, we put in our claim, just as a child before his father. A simple request and nothing more. No cringing, no beseeching, no tears, no wrestling."

"Frederick William Baller (1852–1922) became a Christian at seventeen and sailed to China with the China Inland Mission in 1873, learning Chinese in Nanjing just after the Taiping occupation had ended. From 1896 he headed the mission's training home for men at Anqing, helping to train new missionaries in the language; from 1900 to 1918 he served on the committee revising the Mandarin Bible that became the Chinese Union Version. He died in Shanghai, where he was buried, after completing his biography of Hudson Taylor."
