Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
The disciples had asked concerning the times, When shall these things be? Christ gives them no answer to that, after what number of days and years his prediction should be accomplished
but they had asked, What shall be the sign? That question he answers fully, for we are concerned to understand the signs of the times
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
intended, not to gratify the curiosity of his disciples, but to guide their consciences and conversations, and it is therefore concluded with a practical application
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
which was a tree well known in Judea; and the putting forth of its branches, leaves, and fruit, fell under the observation of everyone
the fig tree putting forth her green figs, is a sign that the winter is past, the spring is come, and summer is at hand
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
The parable of the fig-tree is no more than this, that its budding and blossoming are a presage of summer
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
we foresee that summer is coming, not immediately, but at some distance; after the branch grows tender, we expect the March winds, and the April showers, before the summer comes; however, we are sure it is coming
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
The word of Christ is more sure and lasting than heaven and earth.
We may build with more assurance upon the word of Christ than we can upon the pillars of heaven, or the strong foundations of the earth
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
though it be not fulfilled, either in the time or in the way that we have prescribed; yet, in God's time, which is the best time, and in God's way, which is the best way, it shall certainly be fulfilled
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
Therefore take heed of confounding these two
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
The uncertainty of the time of Christ's coming, is, to those who are watchful, a savour of life unto life, and makes them more watchful; but to those who are careless, it is a savour of death unto death, and makes them more careless.
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
but it respects that present age, or generation of men then living in it; and the sense is, that all the men of that age should not die, but some should live
this is a full and clear proof, that not anything that is said before, relates to the second coming of Christ, the day of judgment, and end of the world
Adam Clarke, Commentary on the Bible,
this race; i.e. the Jews shall not cease from being a distinct people, till all the counsels of God relative to them and the Gentiles be fulfilled
But still it is literally true in reference to the destruction of Jerusalem.
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
there is a manifest distinction made between the tauta (v. 34), and the ekeine (v. 36), these things, and that day and hour
this generation, and many another, shall pass, before that day and hour come
他所引的钦定本经文是“know that it is near”。
Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, Vol. V,
know that it is near, even at the doors
He does not here say what, but it is that which the hearts of his disciples are upon, and which they are inquisitive after, and long for; the kingdom of God is near, so it is expressed in the parallel place
John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible,
or the redemption and deliverance of the people of God was at hand
or else the kingdom of God, or a more enlarged state of the Gospel dispensation was near
So the second coming of Christ, will be a summer of joy and comfort to the saints
the winter of sorrows, afflictions, and persecutions, and of coldness, darkness, and desertion, will be over
Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament,G1074。
a begetting, birth, nativity
that which has been begotten, men of the same stock, a family
a race of men very like each other in endowments, pursuits, character; and especially in a bad sense a perverse race
the whole multitude of men living at the same time: Matthew 24:34; Mark 13:30
the space of from 30 to 33 years
