Reading Path

First Steps for New Believers

Six books to lay a firm foundation

New to faith and unsure where to start? This path moves from what Christians believe, to reading the Bible for yourself, to facing doubts and the spiritual battle, to living with God every day. The first two are short; allow a week or two for each of the rest.
  1. The Apostles' Creed
    The early Western church
Start with the skeleton of the faith: twelve short articles covering Father, Son, Spirit and the gospel. Memorise it and keep returning to it.

  2. The Westminster Shorter Catechism
    Westminster Assembly
The Creed unfolded question by question, beginning with "What is the chief end of man?" Read a few questions a day and look up the Scripture proofs.

  3. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth
Gordon D. Fee & Douglas Stuart
Learn to read Scripture for yourself — how letters, narratives, poetry and prophecy each work — so you can read whole books of the Bible, not just verses.

  4. Mere Christianity
    C.S. Lewis
For the question "Why do you believe?" Lewis reasons from our universal sense of right and wrong to the Christian faith, and on to how Christians should live.

  5. The Pilgrim's Progress
    John Bunyan
See the whole journey — the wicket gate, the cross, the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, Doubting Castle. Look for yourself in its characters.

  6. The Practice of the Presence of God
    Brother Lawrence
Finally, bring faith into every hour. Brother Lawrence learned God's presence among the pots and pans; faith is not only for Sundays.
