📖 Biography

George Duncan (died February 12, 1873) was a member of the Lammermuir Party, the first group of missionaries sent to China by the China Inland Mission. He arrived in China on September 30, 1866.

George Duncan came from Banff, Scotland, and was a stonemason. In 1866 he joined the China Inland Mission founded by Hudson Taylor and, as a member of the Lammermuir Party, the mission's first group of missionaries to China, set sail on May 26 and reached Shanghai on September 30. In December they moved into Hangzhou, at No. 1 Xinkai Lane (Xin Xiang), Qingtai Gate, and established the first mission base.

In 1867 Duncan first made a preaching tour to Lanxi, and was then sent to open work in Nanjing. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom had only recently fallen, and there were no results. In 1868 Hudson Taylor, George Duncan, William Rudland and others came to Yangzhou and went through the Yangzhou riot. In 1868 he married Catherine in Shanghai. In 1869 Duncan was sent again, travelling north along the Grand Canal to Qingjiangpu (now Huai'an), a key hub of the grain-transport system, where he bought land.

In 1873 George Duncan died in England.
