孟玛丽 1878 年生于挪威西南港城斯塔万格一个虔诚信义会家庭，少年时立志赴中国宣教，1901 年受挪威信义传道会差派，抵河南南阳一带开始事工。 她最初在河南乡村做福音访问、学习官话与河南方言；1910 年代起以巡回布道为主要事奉方式，足迹遍及河南、湖北、山东三省。 1926 年她乘坐的上海至烟台轮船遭海盗劫持，被困船上二十多天，她于患难中向乘客和盗匪一对一传讲，事后写成《海盗船上》（Pirates on Board）一书，在挪威与美国教会广为流传。 这次经历坚定了她「逐家逐人面对面追问得救经历」的布道方式。
1927-1932 年间她在山东各教会推动复兴运动，主张：每位受洗教友必须能讲出明确悔改重生经历；每个家庭都要逐人受问；牧师与差会同工自己先要悔改。 她引领的「山东大复兴」（Shantung Revival）由教会扩散至北平、东北、华东，王明道、宋尚节、敬奠瀛（耶稣家庭创办人）、戴永冕等都直接或间接受其影响。 1932 年她因健康原因返挪威，此后笔耕不辍，写下数本回忆录与灵命指南，包括《在恩典中前进》（A Present Help）、《圣灵的工作》。 1962 年病逝于斯塔万格。
她被视为 20 世纪初挪威差会最具影响的女布道家，也是研究中国华北复兴运动史绕不开的核心人物。
