💬 Famous Quotes

"The greatest curse of this boat population is opium. To see how it is ruining the country is a most sad and sickening sight. If the Christian people of England did but know it, could but see what we see, they would to a man lift up their voice against it. Young men of between twenty and thirty completely enslaved by it, their will powerless to break it off, the conscience of its wrong settling them in dead despair. ... God only knows the evil this cursed traffic is working in this poor country."

📖 Biography

David Hill (1840–1896) was a British Wesleyan Methodist missionary to China.

David Hill was born in 1840 in Yorkshire, England, and received his theological training in Richmond. After becoming a minister, he was sent by the British Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society to Hubei Province, China, in 1865. In 1878, when Shanxi Province in North China suffered a great drought, he and the English Baptist missionary Timothy Richard went to Shanxi for famine relief. In that province he drew an opium-addicted Confucian scholar, Xi Shengmo (席胜魔), to the Christian faith.

📚 Major Works

Published by the China Inland Mission, an account of the 1886 meetings held in Shanxi Province, including Xi Shengmo's own testimony of how David Hill led him to faith, with an introduction by Hudson Taylor. Original title: Days of Blessing in Inland China (1887).
