What the Bible says

From The Christian Life Catechism, Q5

How can we know that God is there?

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse.

Last time we said that if we were made with care, meaning has somewhere to rest. But another question follows: does the one who made us really exist?

‘Is there really a God?’ deserves to be taken seriously. Some people don’t believe because they cannot see; others look up at a sky full of stars one night and suddenly feel that all this cannot be an accident. Wherever you stand right now, you are welcome in this lesson.

The Bible does not ask us to close our eyes and believe first. It says, “For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity.” (Romans 1:20) When you see a painting, you know there is a painter. A psalm says the same: “The heavens declare the glory of God.” (Psalm 19:1-2)

Still, looking at the stars can at most make us feel that ‘someone seems to be there’; it cannot tell us what he is like. In the Bible, God introduces himself like this: “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14)—he exists depending on nothing else. Another passage says it even more plainly: “God is love.” (1 John 4:16)

You may say, ‘But I have never seen God.’ The Bible admits it: “No one has seen God at any time.” (John 1:18) Then it goes on: “The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.” (John 1:18) Who that Son is, Lesson 4 will talk about. For now, think about the two questions below.
