Seeking Path · Lesson 7: How Do I Begin to Believe?

This lesson in one sentence: Believing is not thinking every question through first; it is knocking at the door with our questions—and he knocks at our door first. God does not rush us, and neither do we.

Opening

What sentence do you remember most from these sessions?

Read Together

So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17 · WEB

Discussion

  1. You may have heard that ‘God chooses people’. Reading “So faith comes by hearing,” (Romans 10:17) how do you feel?
  2. “To him who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:8)—what do you think ‘knocking with questions you haven’t worked out’ means?
  3. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock” (Revelation 3:20)—picturing this scene, how would you respond?
  4. After these seven sessions, what is the biggest question in your heart now?

Closing

Tell everyone that the lesson ends with two paths, which they can look at quietly at home. The leader can say, ‘If anyone wants to open the door today, you can stay afterwards and I will gladly pray with you; if you want to think some more, that is completely fine, and you are just as welcome.’

Tips for the leader

  • Never ask for a decision, raised hands or standing up in front of the group. Any invitation happens only afterwards, privately, one-to-one.
  • When someone wants to pray, they can use the prayer in the lesson or their own words; the leader simply stays with them.
  • Do not record or count who prayed, and do not announce it in group chats.
  • To those who want to think some more, say clearly: you are welcome to keep coming at any time; the door is always open.

General principles for leaders

  • The leader is not a teacher but someone who walks alongside everyone.
  • Give everyone a chance to speak; with someone who talks a lot, you can gently say, ‘Let’s also hear from friends who haven’t spoken yet.’
  • Don’t rush to give answers. If someone is silent, wait a few more seconds.
  • For a question you can’t answer, you can say, ‘I don’t know either; let’s look it up together,’ and note it down for next time.
  • What is said in the group stays in the group.
  • At the opening, the leader can give their own answer first, showing that it can be simple and honest.
