Opening
When did you first hear of Jesus?
Read Together
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Discussion
- Before reading this lesson, what was Jesus like in your mind?
- “The Word became flesh and lived among us” (John 1:1, 14)—does the idea of God becoming a man strike you as strange, moving, or hard to accept?
- Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.” (Philippians 2:5-8) Why would someone with power do that?
- Jesus asked his disciples who they said he was. If he asked you today, how would you answer?
To take home and think about
If Jesus really is who the Bible says, what difference would that make for you?
Closing
The leader prays briefly (optional), or simply thanks everyone for coming and agrees the time for next session.
Tips for the leader
- The last question is not asking anyone to declare themselves; ‘I don’t know yet’ is a perfectly good answer.
- If someone says, ‘The founders of all religions are much the same,’ you can say that an extra lesson will take this up later; today we are looking at what the Bible says about Jesus.
General principles for leaders
- The leader is not a teacher but someone who walks alongside everyone.
- Give everyone a chance to speak; with someone who talks a lot, you can gently say, ‘Let’s also hear from friends who haven’t spoken yet.’
- Don’t rush to give answers. If someone is silent, wait a few more seconds.
- For a question you can’t answer, you can say, ‘I don’t know either; let’s look it up together,’ and note it down for next time.
- What is said in the group stays in the group.
- At the opening, the leader can give their own answer first, showing that it can be simple and honest.
