James 1:8, He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
J. O. Fraser observed how Muslims prayed five times a day and strictly observed the Ramadan fast without compromise. What he appreciated was not the rituals themselves, but the serious heart toward God behind them. The missionary was taught a lesson by those he was trying to reach. James says, "He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." Often, I believe in God, yet I also try to grasp other securities; with my lips I say the Lord is my all, but in my heart I keep a way of escape. Today I must ask myself: Am I serious about God?
Lord, you see that my heart is often divided: I want to please you, yet I care too much about the opinions of others; I want to follow you, yet I am unwilling to give up my own comfort. Please forgive my double-mindedness and enable me to revere your name with a single focus. Thank you for reminding me through converted Muslims that to believe is to believe earnestly. It is not about keeping more rules, but about surrendering my whole heart to you. Please remove the retreats in my heart, and make me steadfast in all my ways. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
