— Swedish Wikipedia
Erik Folke (1862–1939) was a Swedish missionary who went out to China on his own in 1887 and became the pioneer of Swedish missions there. The mission he started, soon renamed the Swedish Mission in China, worked in Shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan in close association with the China Inland Mission. He translated the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi into Swedish and wrote Tänkare i det gamla Kina (Thinkers of Ancient China, 1922); in Chinese he wrote a history of the Old Testament and translated Luther's On the Freedom of a Christian and the Augsburg Confession.

📖 Scripture Reference

Acts 17:26-27 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,

💭 Reflection

The ancient Chinese sages' listening and contemplation of the 'Dao' is an eternal imprint left by God in the depths of the human soul. As Paul declared in Athens, the Creator placed the desire to seek Him into the hearts of all nations, enabling us to feel our way and look up through the long night. The Christian 'Incarnation of the Word' does not negate the sincere devotion of the ancients, but responds to this longing with a transcendent true light. When we lay down our pride and examine ourselves in humility, we see clearly: all search for the true meaning of life ultimately finds its perfect home and culmination in the incomparably abundant love and truth of Christ.

🙏 Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, praise You for Your true light that enlightens everyone! Thank You for never abandoning those who seek You, and for placing the thirst for truth into human hearts across all times and cultures. Lord, forgive the pride and narrow-mindedness in our hearts. Grant us humility and sensitivity, that we may know how to respect the deep yearning for the 'Dao' in different cultures. May Your Holy Spirit personally guide those hearts longing for the dawn in the darkness, letting the true light illuminate their hidden devotion, and leading them into Your eternal peace and truth. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
