— Wikipedia
Caleb Cook Baldwin (1820–1911) was one of the first American Board missionaries to Fuzhou. He sailed for China with his wife Harriet in 1847 and reached Fuzhou in the spring of 1848, and the couple labored there together for forty-seven years (1848–1895). They learned the local language, founded and superintended schools in city and village, and traveled by boat and sedan chair to preach; with Robert S. Maclay he compiled the Alphabetic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Foochow Dialect (1870), he wrote A Manual of the Foochow Dialect (1871), and with his wife he translated much of the Bible into the Fuzhou dialect.

📖 Scripture Reference

Psalm 92:2-3 With ten-stringed instruments and harps, with soothing sounds of the lyre, proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness every night; it is a good thing.

💭 Reflection

Caleb Cook Baldwin and his wife Harriet labored together in Fuzhou for forty-seven years, day after day founding schools, preaching and translating the Bible. Reflecting on Psalm 92:2, my heart often neglects to "proclaim love" amidst the busyness of the day, and forgets to "remember faithfulness" in the unknown darkness of the night. Faced with life's choices and challenges, each morning is not a repetitive occurrence, but a new commission. Do I see this new day as a workshop of service? Only by being consciously grateful in the ordinary, and receiving love in the morning, can I find true rest in every darkness of life through His unchanging faithfulness.

🙏 Prayer

Our Father in heaven, thank you for your unwavering faithfulness in watching over me during the darkest night, sending peace so that I may wake healthy this morning and see the light of healing and hope. Lord, may your love inspire my heart each morning, so that I may not waste my time. Grant me strength and wisdom to dedicate my life, gifts, and time today entirely to serving you and loving my neighbor. Whether in the toil of the day or the darkness of night, may my words and deeds reflect your glory. In the name of our Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.
