1 Corinthians 9:22 To the weak I have become weak, in order to be weak. I have become all of myself to all people, so that by all means I might save some.
When Milne began learning Chinese, he said the task called for "bodies of brass, lungs of steel ... and lives of Methuselahs"—a joke, but also the truth. He did not avoid the difficulty; he learned sentence by sentence, counting each one gained as a dollar earned. Paul said, "I am made all things to all men." That humility is often worked out in exactly this kind of slow, patient labor: learning another's language and understanding how they speak, instead of rushing to hand out answers. We often approach others with the superiority of those who "hold the truth," and are stingy with the time it takes to understand their background, prejudices, and struggles. True service begins with listening and learning. Let us ask ourselves: in my work, family, and relationships, am I willing, for love's sake, to become a patient student first, learning sentence by sentence to understand the people around me?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding my ministry through Milne's humility and Paul's resolve. Lord, forgive my arrogance; I often rush to give advice before truly understanding others' hearts. Grant me a teachable heart, so that when facing people from different backgrounds, I may first be a careful "student," deeply understanding their perspectives of the world and their inner wounds. Lord Jesus, teach me how to "become flesh" like You, so that my love is not superficial, but patient enough to learn, to listen, and to understand. Before proclaiming the truth, may I learn to empathize with the weaknesses of others, so that my words are not cold, but carry Your warmth, precisely touching the depths of their souls. Expand my empathy, so that I may truly share in the benefits of the Gospel. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
