— Andrew Murray
Or does not, so the mother speaks, the child belong to God? Was it not to bear His own image, as His servant, for His own glory, that He created man, that my child, too, has been born? God looks upon him as His; he has only been lent and entrusted to me to train. It is indeed not mine but the Lord's. And because I am naturally so inclined to forget this, to love and treat the child as if it were altogether mine, I count it such a precious privilege, in a distinct act of surrender, to give it to the Lord for all the days of its life.

📖 Scripture Reference

Psalm 127:3 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.

💭 Reflection

Watching our children perform on stage, we often develop a misplaced sense of ownership, mistakenly believing their talent is the result of our parents' efforts. However, scripture warns us that our children are an inheritance entrusted to us by God, and we are merely temporary stewards. As Andrew Murray puts it in Hannah's voice, the child "has only been lent and entrusted to me to train. It is indeed not mine but the Lord's." A child's outstanding performance is God's pruning and gift to His inheritance. As stewards, if we over-control, we will obscure the Lord's light. We need to reflect: in education, do we cling tightly to sovereignty, or do we learn to let go, allowing the Lord to reign supreme in our children's lives? Only when we step back can God obtain complete glory in their lives.

🙏 Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for entrusting this precious inheritance to us. The notes flowing from our children's fingertips are gifts of Your grace. Lord, forgive our pride in often wanting to rule in Your place, and grant us the wisdom and humility of a "steward." Teach us how to bring our children to Your throne of grace each day, and how to step back at appropriate times, allowing You to reign in their lives. May the success of their piano performances not become their idols, but the starting point for their reverence for You. Work in their hearts, so that their lives may not be lived for worldly applause, but only to accomplish the will of You, their true Master. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
