"The stiff and wooden quality about our religious lives is a result of our lack of holy desire. Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted. Too bad that with many of us He waits so long, so very long, in vain."
— A.W. Tozer

"Your years neither go nor come; but ours both go and come, that all may come. ... Your years are one day, and Your day is not daily, but today; because Your today yields not with tomorrow, for neither does it follow yesterday. Your today is eternity."

"The Scottish missionary John Chalmers (1825-1899) served with the London Missionary Society in late Qing China as a preacher, writer and translator. His English and Cantonese Pocket Dictionary (1859) made the term "Cantonese" current in English, and in 1868 he published in London the first English translation of the Tao Te Ching. In The Origin of the Chinese he pointed out that in the Book of Poetry and the Book of History, Shangti and Ti occur more than eighty times with the meaning of God, "that is, of One Supreme Deity.""

"Pastor Ding Limei (1871–1936) always laid great emphasis on prayer and always carried a little notebook with him. In the last two years of his life, stricken with liver cancer, he stayed at home and gave his time to prayer and writing, praying earnestly for the church and for all people. At his death there were three such notebooks, holding the names of some five thousand people for whom he had prayed individually."

"Mary Stone (Shi Meiyu, 1873–1954) was born into a pastor's family in Jiujiang. In 1896 she and her classmate Ida Kahn (Kang Cheng) graduated from the University of Michigan medical school and returned at once to practise in Jiujiang, treating more than 2,300 patients in their first ten months. From 1920 she and Jennie V. Hughes founded the Bethel Church and Bethel Hospital in Shanghai, adding primary and secondary schools, a seminary, an orphanage and a nursing school, and the two women took thirty-six poor children into their own home. The nurses and doctors she trained cared for bodies and also spread the gospel; as a preacher in the Chinese church she became even better known than as a physician."

"I, too, with my two children, moved back into the abandoned home — now so empty and desolate. But let no lament take away the gratitude for ten years of happy marriage, for fellowship in the work of the mission, in faith, in love and in harmony. It was a great gift from God, and I have kept her memory as a precious jewel."
