"Prayer is, as it were, a breathing in of the Holy Spirit, and God so pours His Holy Spirit into the life of the prayerful that they become "living souls" (Gen. ii.7; John xx.22). They will never die, for the Holy Spirit pours Himself by means of prayer into their spiritual lungs, and fills their spirits with health and vigour and everlasting life."

"We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Swatow, as in Kilsyth, to turn the souls of sinners from darkness unto light, and from the power of Satan unto God. We need this, and this God has promised to prayer — true prayer. Who among us has the spirit of prayer! They are mighty who have this spirit, and weak who have it not."

"Nor need our claim in the presence of God be any less simple. When we once have the deep, calm assurance of His will in the matter, we put in our claim, just as a child before his father. A simple request and nothing more. No cringing, no beseeching, no tears, no wrestling."

"Frederick William Baller (1852–1922) became a Christian at seventeen and sailed to China with the China Inland Mission in 1873, learning Chinese in Nanjing just after the Taiping occupation had ended. From 1896 he headed the mission's training home for men at Anqing, helping to train new missionaries in the language; from 1900 to 1918 he served on the committee revising the Mandarin Bible that became the Chinese Union Version. He died in Shanghai, where he was buried, after completing his biography of Hudson Taylor."

"The American Episcopal priest John Gillespie Magee (1884–1953) graduated from Yale in 1906 and from 1912 served the Episcopal mission in Nanjing. During the Nanjing Massacre in December 1937 he chaired the Nanking Committee of the International Red Cross and filmed the atrocities of Japanese troops with a 16mm camera; the films were smuggled out of Nanjing and shown to foreign governments as evidence. His eldest son, John Gillespie Magee Jr., later wrote the famous poem "High Flight.""

"Without prayer, all our plans, our building and our teaching can hardly bear true fruit; what we should ask for is not that our work be made easy, but that our faith may not waver."
