"To acquire the Chinese is a work for men with bodies of brass, lungs of steel, heads of oak, hands of spring-steel, eyes of eagles, hearts of apostles, memories of angels, and lives of Methuselahs! Still I make a little progress. I hope, if not to be master, yet to gain as much as will suit the purposes of a Missionary. Every sentence gained I value at the rate of a dollar."

"William Cassels (1858–1925), one of the “Cambridge Seven,” sailed for China in 1885 and was consecrated first Bishop in Western China in 1895. His biographer records that he was a profound believer in prayer, setting special times for intercession from his first entry into Szechwan; a colleague of twenty years said that in listening to his prayers one learned how much at home he was in the Secret Place—“there was a holy intimacy in his praying.” Around 1899 the pressure of work became almost overwhelming, and Mrs. Cassels wrote of her fears that he would break down."

"I undertook this work not as one making a literary venture, but as a missionary of the Church doing missionary work. I felt that God had called me to it, and had especially prepared and fitted me for it."

"Expecting Western missionaries to shoulder the responsibility of evangelizing this generation all by themselves is both practically impossible and biblically indefensible. The evangelization of the world is the task of the entire global church."

"While trying to change the religious beliefs of the Tibetan people can be as discouraging as trying to move the perpetually frozen mountains of Tibet, the greatest comfort for missionaries is knowing that Christ will surely reign wherever the sun shines."
