"The French Jesuit Joachim Bouvet (1656–1730) was one of the first six Jesuits sent to China by Louis XIV. Arriving in Beijing in 1688, he and Jean-François Gerbillon taught the Kangxi Emperor mathematics and astronomy. He devoted himself to the I Ching, seeking points of contact between the Chinese classics and the Bible, and in 1701 sent a diagram of the I Ching hexagrams to the German mathematician Leibniz. He died in Beijing in 1730."
