Life

Made in God’s Image

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1). God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen 1:26). “God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27). “God blessed them. God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it’” (Gen 1:28). “God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” (Gen 1:31). On the seventh day God “rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done” (Gen 2:2).

The Garden of Eden

“The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen 2:7). God planted a garden in Eden and put the man there (Gen 2:8); “A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers” (Gen 2:10). God put the man “into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it” (Gen 2:15), and commanded him: “but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die” (Gen 2:17).

God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him” (Gen 2:18). The man named every living creature, “but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him” (Gen 2:20). God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, and made a woman, “and brought her to the man” (Gen 2:22). The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh” (Gen 2:23). “The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed” (Gen 2:25).

Where Are You?

“Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which the LORD God had made” (Gen 3:1). It said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” (Gen 3:1), and, “You won’t really die” (Gen 3:4). The woman “took some of its fruit, and ate. Then she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too” (Gen 3:6). “Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked” (Gen 3:7).

They heard the LORD God’s voice, “and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden” (Gen 3:8). “The LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’” (Gen 3:9). The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it” (Gen 3:12); the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Gen 3:13).

Out of Eden

God said to the serpent, “He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel” (Gen 3:15). To the woman: “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth” (Gen 3:16). To Adam: “For you are dust, and you shall return to dust” (Gen 3:19).

“The man called his wife Eve because she would be the mother of all the living” (Gen 3:20). “The LORD God made garments of animal skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them” (Gen 3:21). “Therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken” (Gen 3:23), and placed cherubim and a flaming sword at the east of the garden, “to guard the way to the tree of life” (Gen 3:24).

Cain and Abel

Eve gave birth to Cain and said, “I have gotten a man with the LORD’s help” (Gen 4:1); then she gave birth to Abel (Gen 4:2). “The LORD respected Abel and his offering, but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering” (Gen 4:4-5). To the angry Cain the LORD said, “If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it” (Gen 4:7).

“Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him” (Gen 4:8). The LORD asked, “Where is Abel, your brother?”; Cain said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen 4:9). “Cain left the LORD’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden” (Gen 4:16). Among his descendants was Lamech, who said to his wives, “If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times” (Gen 4:24).

“Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, ‘for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him’” (Gen 4:25). “At that time men began to call on the LORD’s name” (Gen 4:26).

The Descendants of Adam

“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness” (Gen 5:1). “He created them male and female, and blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them Adam” (Gen 5:2).

“Adam lived one hundred thirty years, and became the father of a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth” (Gen 5:3). “The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he became the father of other sons and daughters” (Gen 5:4). “All the days that Adam lived were nine hundred thirty years, then he died” (Gen 5:5).

In the New Testament

Luke’s genealogy of Jesus goes all the way back to the beginning: “the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God” (Luke 3:38).

Speaking of marriage, the Lord Jesus quoted Genesis: “Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female” (Matt 19:4), “and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh’?” (Matt 19:5).

Paul says: “Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death passed to all men because all sinned” (Rom 5:12); Adam “is a foreshadowing of him who was to come” (Rom 5:14); “For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous” (Rom 5:19). He also says: “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive” (1 Cor 15:22); “The first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit” (1 Cor 15:45).

Paul also mentions Eve: “as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness” (2 Cor 11:3); “For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience” (1 Tim 2:13-14).

Revelation speaks of the serpent: “The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world” (Rev 12:9).
